Pavers or Tiles? - Tiles May Be a Better, Cheaper Option!
Most people associate pavers with outdoor use. Pavers are regarded as products to be used over soft bases (substrates) such as rammed earth or roadbase sprinkled with sand. On these foundations the stone used needs to be strong to ensure against movement that might cause cracking. As a result, the thickness of the stone needs to be 30mm or more, depending on the traffic load.
These days, outside areas are often concreted providing an incredibly strong and very stable substrate. As a result, a much thinner "tile" of 12 - 14mm might be quite adequate (depending on the flexural strength of the stone and the traffic load expected).Apart from the thickness of the stone and the cost (tiles are cheaper!) there is no difference between a tile and a paver!
Travertine - Sealing Recommended for High Risk Areas
Mocha is dense with low porosity so it has a natural ability to resist penetration from agents that may discolour or stain the stone. In low risk areas that are swept and hosed clean (to remove leaves, debris etc) sealing may not be required.
Mocha has lovely earthy colours and while it is unlikely to show dirt stains - coffee, tea, wine, oil and grease will all disclour the stone if ignored. The most vulnerable spots are kitchens and entertainment & BBQ areas where food and drink spillages are more likely. Even a light, cooking grade, olive oil will leave a residue unless the stone is sealed.
Salts in solution from saltwater pools are corosive even to a stone with high resistance to salt. Unless you intend to wash the pool surrounds after use to remove salt residues, sealing is probably a good form of insurance. There should not be a problem using this travertine around traditionally chlorinated pools.
Two coats of either Ultra-Solv or Sealer's Choice Gold penetrating sealers should provide excellent stain protection for many, many years. Under no circumtances should surface sealers be used on this stone in wet areas or where the stone has been laid on poorly drained substrates. For more information go to, Stone Sealers.
