Sandstone - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Sandstone is a generic name for a type of stone but there are huge differences between one sandstone and another. Brothers and sisters may come from the same family and share some DNA but they rarely look the same or behave in the same way.

Sandstones have one thing in common - they all contain quartzite. Apart from that they are all different. There are thousands of sandstone quarries in the world and the characteristics of the stone they produce are unique to the quarry.

Some sandstone on the market is unfit for sale - the quality is appalling. We test our stone to prove it is of the highest quality available. Please use our test results - it will give you confidence that the stone is of good quality and will perform.

Superior Density & Durability of Bellstone's Sandstone

Bellstone’s sandstone is premium quality and available in a range of different colours that are popular for both indoor and outdoor design needs. All our sandstone is tested for density, water absorption, slip resistance and resistance to salt attack. This is done so that architects, designers and builders can match product to its intended purpose.

Test results of all our sandstone products are listed on each product page and in the section for test results.

Bellstone product is tough, durable and very versatile; it is used for a wide variety of purposes – floors, walls, paving, coping, cladding, pillars and landscaping features. Sandstone performs well around traditionally chlorinated pools but it is not recommended for use around salt water pools without professional advice - the chemical environment is extremely corrosive.

Sandstone is non-combustible and therefore fire resistant; it has high thermal conductivity so conducts heat quite quickly.

Kids Won't Slip - Safe When Wet

Sandstone slip resistance tests results on Bellstone products reveal that they have excellent grip characteristics and provide extremely safe surfaces to walk on in outdoor arenas, even when wet.

Surface finishes include split face, honed and sand blasted. Under-surfaces are either natural split (variable thickness) or calibrated to achieve uniformity to a nominal thickness.

Project specific strength tests (flexural, compression & modulus of rupture) conducted for veneer and cladding projects, abrasion tests for high traffic concourses & piazzas and salt tolerance tests for swimming pool aprons can be conducted to ensure compliance with ASA standards.

Himalayan Stone - Shoosh, Its a Secret!

Indian sandstone is mostly sourced from Rajasthan. In Australia, it is frequently and inaccurately marketed as “Himalayan stone” – no sandstone is quarried from this region of India. We won't tell anyone, if you don't!

Stone Quality Ratings - Independent & Honest Information to Reduce Risk

Testing stone is a fiddly and expensive process. Information on our test results are published so that our customers have a better understanding of a stone's capabilities. The stone quality ratings using 1 to 5 stars is based on the test results and are provided to help you interpret the results more easily. As new tests are completed they replace the old tests; nothing has been omitted or edited. Information on buying, fixing, maintaining and sealing stone products is available in the user guide section.
