Arctic Green Slate Tiles for Floors
Outdoor Slate Flooring - Hotel Steyne, Manly
|
|
![]() |
The Hotel Steyne overlooking Manly Beach is in the process of refurbishing their level 2 for a new Chinese Restaurant and terrace. The images above illustrate the design synergies between slate and timber that have been used to create a maritime theme using recycled wharf hardwood. The FIFO friends perched on the ledge lend support to the designer's concept for this beautiful outdoor verandah overlooking Manly Beach.
Of interest is the way the slate tiles have been used. A diagonal pattern of 300x100mm slates have been used down the terrace thoroughfare and 300x300mm slates used within the horseshoe shaped hardwood benches. It is refreshing to see the slate used in such a creative way.

Arctic Green Slate - Characteristics
|
This popular slate is of exceptional quality with varying shades of ocean green colours. It is a dense stone suitable for all external & internal floor and wall applications. Surface sealing is suggested for internal and external food areas but may be left natural for all other applications. It is natural split both sides allowing for a choice of surface depending on which side has the preferred texture and colour. Image right - Arctic Green slate in one of the heritage restrooms at the Red Lantern on Riley restaurant, Darlinghurst. A gloss sealer was applied which has darkened to colour. |

Slate Flooring Tiles - A Very Natural Building Material for Residential Projects
|
A measure of the environmental credentials of a building product is the involvement by man and process up to the point where it is fixed to a building. On that basis this slate is a clear winner. This slate has a natural split surface which means it is split along natural cleavage lines and does not require expensive, energy demanding, processing machinery to saw it. However, It does mean the thickness of the material varies a bit - naturally! The natural split surface of the slate is illustrated in the image (right) of a residential verandah photographed after a light shower of rain. |

Slate Colour & Texture Enhanced with Natural Split Surface
Slate splits naturally along planes revealing pallets of vivid colour not seen in stone with processed surfaces.
This slate ranges from an ocean green through to a misty grey in colour
The topography of the surface is textured and has character, depth and grain - as you can see from the images on this page.
Sealants Can Enhance Slate Colour
|
The slate in the image below has been moistened to demonstrate how some sealers enhance or slightly darken the slate colour. Surface or topical sealants (eg Aqua Mix's Seal & Finish Low-Sheen or High Gloss Sealer) will result in either a low sheen or a gloss finish (see image on the top left) depending on the outcome desired and the sealant used. An enhanced colour with a mat finish like the slate below can be achieved using Aqua Mix Enrich 'N' Seal which is a penetrating sealant. The display pieces below were photographed dry with no sealant. |

Arctic Green Slate - Display Pieces with Moistened Surface

The slates in the image above were deliberately moistened to illustrate the effect of a surface sealant that leaves the slate slightly darker with a low sheen to the slate surface.
Arctic Green Slate - Display Pieces with Dry Surface

The slates in the image above are untreated; the surface is quite natural. It is similar to the surface of a floor that has been treated with a sealer that does not affect the colour or finish.

The slates above were photographed straight out of the crate.
