Sunrise Floor Slate - Characteristics

This is one of our most popular products. It doesn't show the dirt, it's durable and very easy to maintain.

The test results below are proof that this slate is of exceptional quality. Colours range from rustic browns, grey and some dark browns.

It is natural split on both sides allowing for a choice of surface depending on the side with the preferred texture and colour.

The test results below illustrate the quality and durability of this slate; they also explain its worldwide popularity.

Slate Flooring Tiles - The Environmentally Friendly Option

A measure of the environmental credentials of a building product is the involvement by man and process up to the point where it is fixed to a building. On that basis this slate is a clear winner.

This slate has a natural split surface which means it is split along natural cleavage lines and does not require expensive, energy demanding, processing machinery to saw it. However, It does mean the thickness of the material varies a bit - naturally!

Slate splits naturally along planes revealing pallets of vivid colour not seen in stone with processed surfaces.

The topography of the surface is intricate and has character, depth and grain - as you will see in the images of individual slates below.

Flakes of slate that are occasionally seen are evidence that the stone is high enough quality to split naturally and that it is genuinely slate..

The flakes if present, are easily removed as explained in the FAQ section.

Sealants Can Enhance Slate Colour - or you can opt for a more natural look.

The slate in the images below is the same. The only difference is that we have moistened the surface on the slate in the image on the right to demonstrate how some sealers enhance or slightly darken the slate colour.

Surface or topical sealants (eg Aqua Mix's Seal & Finish Low-Sheen or High Gloss Sealer) will result in either a low sheen or a gloss finish (see image on the top left) depending on the outcome desired and the sealant used.

An enhanced colour with a mat finish like the slate on the right below can be achieved using Aqua Mix Enrich 'N' Seal which is a penetrating sealant.

To Seal or Not To Seal slate?

The test results below indicate that this slate does not need to be sealed; afterall it's dark colour is not likely to show the usual food, coffee, tea or red wine stains! So there is a good argument for saving your money.

However, there are two very practical reasons for sealing. When used indoors, some people prefer the colour enhancement provided by surface sealers and on the natural split surface cleaning is much easier as well especially when the slated has been treated with a topical sealant .

The other reason sealants are used is to protect the slate from oil and grease stains especially around food preparation areas eg kitchens or alfresco BBQ areas. Unless these are wiped up quickly, they may leave marks on an unsealed surface. Mind you, they would be well disguised amidst the array of Sunrise colours!
